In the novel, “the strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde” , Robert Louis Stevenson presents Dr Jekyll as a conflicted individual in many different ways.

At the start of the novel, Jekyll is presented as a good friendly lovable man with lots of friends which love and respect him. At the start of the novel in chapter 1, Robert Louis Stevenson describes Dr Jekyll as a ‘good influence’. This quotation clearly shows that Dr Jekyll has a good morale within him hence, so you would normally be attracted to him because he is a good, friendly, lovable person. The word ‘good’ is being used and the word is used to let the reader point out that Dr Jekyll is a positive, friendly person and puts him in the context of good instead of evil.

In the middle of the novel, Dr Jekyll is presented as good, but he is also presented as uneasiness also with a little piece of a bad man. An example of this be used would be ‘Dr Jekyll looking deathly sick’. This quotation shows that he uses imagery to give what state he is in, which is very ill close to death. This contributes to the disturbed nature of Dr Jekyll as his appearance because his appearance is very unsettling. This tells the reader to doubt Jekyll and do not portray him as a ‘good influence’ anymore when continuing the novel.

At the end of the novel however, Robert Louis Stevenson finally reveals Dr Jekyll’s secret. His secret was that Jekyll and Hyde were actually the same person. This shows how Jekyll actually turns out to be a bad person. An example which describes Hyde is ‘dreadful smile’ which gives us the impression of how he is a bad natured person. The specific word ‘dreadful’ gives us the impression that he is a very evil person. Due to the word ‘dreadful’, it exaggerates upon the smile in order to tell the reader how is evil. This presents how Dr Jekyll is a conflicted individual.

Mr Utterson opinion of Jekyll’s situation is confused as he does not understand why Dr Jekyll, a good middle class man, would help out a twisted individual who harms children like Hyde. This creates confusion for Utterson as he tries to investigate why has this terrible thing happened. he initially comes to the conclusion that Jekyll was being blackmailed. The confusion begins at the start of the story when Hyde gets caught trampling a young girl. When Hyde gets confronted, he agrees to pay a fee and that goes to Dr Jekyll for a cheque. The fact that Jekyll signs the cheque confuses Utterson as it shows his conflicted personality within Mr Utterson’s opinion.

Lanyon’s description of Jekyll’s ethics shows a conflicted personality in Jekyll. Lanyon says ‘began to go wrong, wrong in the mind.’ This shows that Jekyll is doing something really incorrect as he must be doing something bad that contributes to in science. The use of repetition within the quotation gives a reassurring effect as it almost convinces the reader and consider him differently about him. This shows how his mind was not like before and how Jekyll has a conflicted personality.

Robert Louis Stevenson uses many various figurative language to support character description is by showing how violent the weather is.
