In this essay, I will be comparing the ways in which the two poems ‘Eden Rock’  and ‘walking away’ are being presented by moments of separation to communicate thoughts about letting go of a loved one. However, ‘Eden Rock’ is being presented from a viewpoint of a child; Whereas, ‘Walking away’ is being portrayed as a different viewpoint from a adult (father).

In the poem, ‘Eden Rock’ Charles Causley presents the moments of separation as traumatic for a child. The poet creates an image of the separation between the child and his parents by a stream. The parents call to him ‘over the drifted stream’ to join them on the other side. The fact that he uses a verb, ‘drifted’, shows the disturbing danger for the child as he is on the other side of the stream. The verb suggests that two things are slowly parting. This suggests that he is scared that if he falls in, he would be washed away from his parents. Charles Causley is trying to communicate ideas about his parents no longer being there to support him. The river becomes symbolic of the fear of being washed away from his parents. Therefore Charles Causley presents this moment of separation as traumatic for the child. Whereas in the poem ‘Walking away’ Cecil-Day Lewis presents the moment of separation as traumatic for the father. The father talks about the precious memories of him and his son. Describing
