Question: what methods does Shakespeare use to keep the audience interested in is play, Macbeth?

Answer: The method which is used by William Shakespeare to keep the audience’s interest on his play “Macbeth” so easily is by being very creative and smart. By being creative and smart, he uses a varied amount of dramatic devices in his play. These effects are very unique to his play.

A clear message of this example is the use of dramatic irony. An example of this is the following quote, “It’s concluded: Banquo, thy soul’s fight if it finds heaven, must find it out tonight”. This clearly states that Macbeth is telling us that the agreement has been closed and that Macbeth wants Banquo’s soul (life) in heaven tonight. In addition to this, helps to create tension within the play and onto any reader as it would make you think about the next part of the story and what is going to happen as you read on.

Another use of a dramatic irony will be a pathetic fallacy. When King Duncan’s death was discovered, Lennox describes how “some say, the earth was feverous and dide shake”. This tells us that the impact of the earth heard about the death of King Duncan was a shock. So therefore the pathetic fallacy can be well used for the audience interest by engaging more with the events of the play.

A different use of dramatic devices is the use of personification. A personification makes ideas to be strengthened by making them easier to understand for the audience and making it clearer. It is a richer and more interesting way to mention points and say what the characters are thinking. An example of this is the following quote. “That my keen knife sees not the wound it makes”. This can mean that lady Macbeth wants Banquo to be killed by not seeing him being killed or Lady Macbeth does not want people to see the knife because of the blood of Banquo. This means Shakespeare is trying to say what their plan is and what they are thinking through objects. Also, by using personification, the audience knows something that the characters do not know and that’s what makes the audience interested by it.

An extra use of a dramatic device that Shakespeare uses is clever language. Macbeth has many scenes of compelling drama. However, to my mind Act 3, Scene 4, has to be one of the play’s most fascinating and dramatic scenes. In one short scene, Shakespeare manages to capture both the moment of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s triumph and their downfall.Macbeth’s illegal attempt to take over the throne of Scotland has been successful. He reminds his guests that they all “know their own degrees” and offers them a “hearty welcome”. He makes extensive use of the royal plural a sense of majesty and power: “You will mingle with so as project society and play the humble host. Our hostess keeps her state, but in best time we will require her welcome.” This quote means that Macbeth wants all the citizens to come together. And the lady Macbeth will appreciate to welcome the people. Shakespeare uses this strategy to make it more interesting and rarer. Plus, it makes the audience feel like you’re in the play and also feel the feelings about the people.

A different type dramatic device that Shakespeare uses in Macbeth is complex stories. This unique device makes Macbeth so different to other films and books are complex stories. This device make you think about Macbeth “what does this even mean?” and it will make you want to keep on reading until you could understand what is going on in the play, Macbeth. For example, in a quote of Macbeth, it clearly says “The thane of fife had a wife”. His quote shows that she is afraid now for her and her husband. She realizes that the consequences of their actions will now decide their future, and her future does not look good. She is also wondering if she will ever be forgiven for her and her husband’s evil actions. This has taken some time to think about.

What I feel about the methods that Shakespeare use in his play, Macbeth is rather different. I see his devices sneaky and intellectual. He also wants you to come in the show and play in the show, it makes you know something that the characters do not know also the language it uses makes it more powerful and makes shakespeare sound very clever.
